what follows is a piss poor attempt at divulging my experience at playing these fan games, solely because tpc doesn't release good mobile games for me to be entertained enough (i also don't own a switch, but that's for another day.)

i first found out about these rom hacks through my cousin, who was playing pokémon glazed at that time, if i remember correctly. it was very interesting, especially because they used my favorite engine (the gameboy advance) and my favorite base game: fire red. i think i played it during a transitional period between pokémon x and pokémon go being announced for mobile. everyone and their moms were playing the new games while i found the wonderful world of rom hacks, which provided me with fun new content with these new mechanics without having to have a 3ds. should i do a rating on the shit i've played so far?

pokémon glazed - ★★★★

i don't really know if it was genuinely good or if i have nostalgia tied to it, but i think glazed is genuinely a fun game. i vividly remember tunod region (still makes me laugh that they named the region after a fucking donut) and a little bit of the story. there is a legitimate post-game and all that and a few horror-esque plot points that i really enjoyed. i wish i remember the team i used for my first playthrough but i'm pretty sure i had a luxray. the graphics were a huge plus point for me, especially because they lowkey resembled fire red but also not? if that makes sense? i also liked the character designs and of course, the evil talking pikachu even though that entire plot point was a massive CHEEZE now that i think about it.

pokémon gaia - ★★★

i do not remember much of this game, sadly. i only remember that i played this game while it was still kind of in beta mode and the devs were releasing new versions every now and then. and so, i had progressed a bit far into the game (i think i was past the league) until i was faced with a compulsory plot related quest where i had to head into the deepest part of some cave. this cave was absolutely not fully coded because i was faced with a level 84 sunflora. obviously i was thrilled at first, and i even caught one thinking it was my lucky score. but the game devs were probably laughing at me LMAO... every single tile had unprogrammed sunflora that just kept obliterating my team with leaf storms and solar beams and i ultimately couldn't progress through the game after that. so for this memory alone, i'm knocking off two stars.

pokémon insurgence - ★★★

i had to literally download a separate installer and a software just to play this game. BUT, the opening of this game is actually very interesting and there's like blood and shit. the kanto starters also get like secondary typings and new designs which are honestly so cool.

like? they're so awesome, look at that.

didn't finish playing the game though :( loading the game itself was such a pain in the ass, maybe i can finish playing the newest version someday.

pokémon radical red - ★★★★

ah, here we are. the bane of my existence. i blame this game on all the pokétubers i watch, because all i heard was how fun it was to play this game despite it being so hard. i especially love watching these strategized sweeps and wanted to try it out for myself (we all know how it went, sigh). i first downloaded version 2.1 and i was already impressed by the amount of buffs they had given to early game encounters and then also including gen 8 mechanics. but nothing would've prepared me for the fucking difficulty of it. i've never been big on conscious ev training until this game existed and beat my ass to do it because otherwise i was forced to watch my pokémon die repeatedly on the screen with a single blow. i played a randomized version on my first attempt and realized quickly on what a bad idea it was, so i reset and played it the normal way.

here's my winning bunch!

i was kinda sad that i couldn't take killer the obstagoon into the e4 battles but she's a sport and she had to make a sacrifice for Aegislash the aegislash to take her spot and give me the win. i gave up half way after i wasn't able to beat lorelei but i just sat down one day and said, "i'm not going to give up until i win." and that's exactly what i did. i wish i grabbed a hall of fame snapshot but D:

pokémon renegade platinum - ★★★★.5

wanted to play this game as a refresher to the original platinum because honestly, nothing really fazes me in the original game except for cynthia and ace trainers dennis and maya. but this was a slight difficulty increase that i found very balanced and well done! the addition of fairy types was quite the blessing because i don't know what i would've done in certain situations without my milotic and her moonblast. i picked chimchar as my starter and immediately boxed it because i knew i had speed boost blaziken available to me in floroama town. speed boost blaziken is honestly a blessing. but the real reason why i gave this a four and a half is because of masquerain.

masquerain has climbed to the top of my favorites so quickly, it's actually insane. want to personally kiss the devs' hands for giving masquerain a generous buff in the game by bumping its speed and special attack and giving it access to so many good moves by level up alone. somehow, my masquerain ended up having more special attack than a rotom wash (CRAZY!) and i think i had my proudest mom moment there. intimidate plus crazy speed and special attack is literally god sent. special shoutout to Shyanbaggy the meganium for lowkey carrying the run with the screens and stuff, i love you.

here he is! my absolute star <3

and here's the rest of the sinnoh champs!

i'm currently playing radical red version 2.3a and koga still has the same team, much to my dismay. and i've already given up seeing my mega sceptile die repeatedly to boomburst from that fucking mega toxtricity. think i'm gonna have to use save states again, sigh. hopefully, i'll have some soul left before i finish the pre league battle with brendan.
